Our DOT Hazmat: Carrier Requirements - Rail training course provides students with training on the Department of Transportation's requirements for the shipment of hazardous materials by railway.

Students who should take this course are those involved in the shipment of hazardous materials by railway. This can include, but is not limited to, workers who package materials for shipment, and load and unload hazardous materials for shipment.

The bottom line in ALL SITUATIONS is that employers are required to ensure that their employees are adequately trained to do their job.

Course Objectives

The objectives of this DOT Hazmat: Carrier Requirements - Rail course address the requirements for the transportation of hazardous materials by rail found in 49 CFR Part 174 of the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Compare the general operating requirements for the DOT and the railroad industry in general;
  • Identify the exceptions for the transportation of hazardous materials by rail;
  • Describe the information found in the Segregation Table for Hazardous Materials for rail transport;
  • Identify the documentation needed for rail cars within a train containing hazardous materials;
  • Illustrate the proper positioning of placarded cars in a train using the Placard Group Table;
  • Understand rail industry restrictions as they relate to the transportation of hazardous materials, including speeds, routes, and inspections; and
  • Identify incident/accident reporting requirements.

Course Outline

This fully narrated course is built for success, and includes interactions, exercises, and quiz questions intended to help prepare students for the final exam. Students must answer each quiz question and complete each interaction in order to proceed.

Course Exams

This course has a final exam based upon the content covered in the course. The exam consists of 10 questions randomly selected from a larger pool of questions. A score of 70% or better is required to pass the exam. Students who do not pass the exam the first time may retake the exam as many times as necessary in order to pass.

Accreditation

This training is brought to you by a team of Certified Outreach Trainers and is based upon Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations found in 49 CFR Part 174.

Continuing Education Credits

Per the California Department of Public Health, this course is approved for 2 Contact Hours (0.2 CEUs) of Continuing Education (CE). While these CE units are intended for Registered Environmental Health Specialists (REHS) in California, they are often transferred to other accrediting bodies. Please check with your specific agency for more details and to learn if your agency accepts this course for CE credit (Public Health Accreditation #044).

Training Requirements

A complete DOT Hazardous Materials training curriculum must include:

Each Hazmat Employer must train, test and certify each Hazmat Employee within 90 days of employment. Recurrent training is required at least once every 3 years.

Initial training is required within 90 days for new employees or employees who assume new hazmat-related responsibilities. Untrained employees may perform hazardous materials employee functions, but only under direct supervision.

The Department of Transportation requires all hazmat employees to be retrained and tested at least once every 3 years. However, the FAA, under 14 CFR, requires retraining for air carrier employees every 2 years.

Both the DOT and FAA require employers to maintain training records.

This training used to be referred to as DOT HM-181, DOT HM-126 or DOT HM-126F, which are older regulations associated with these training requirements.

Additional Training

This DOT Modes of Transportation: Rail course provides training in the requirements for any personnel involved in the transportation of hazardous materials by rail.

Additional training may be warranted depending on the role of the worker and their level of involvement, which may include emergency response training, additional DOT hazardous materials training, or training in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) used as part of the job.

Additional training in the use of any personal protective equipment (PPE) or clothing used as part of emergency response is also required and should be provided by your employer.

Workers must receive additional training, when required by Federal, State, or local regulations, on the specific hazards of their job. Training providers should be used to ensure credibility and augment a company's training program. Therefore, in addition to the training provided by an outside party, a student should receive site-specific training supplied by his or her employer. This training should target the company's unique approach to hazard prevention, including the use of site-specific equipment, health and safety policies, and emergency procedures. As a rule, this company-specific training should be well documented.

In-Depth Security Training

In-depth Security training is required when an employer is required by 49 CFR 172.800(b) to have an In-depth Security plan. This training is site specific and covers actions taken by employees according to the employer's plan. In-depth security training is not currently offered.

Driver Training For Motor Vehicle Operators

Drivers of motor vehicles that transport hazardous materials must have training that involves how to safely transport a hazardous material by highway. This may involve a wide variety of driver safety courses. Driver training is not currently offered.
