This DOT Hazmat General Awareness/Function Specific course is an in-depth course for all employees involved in the transportation of hazardous materials. This training is a 10-hour course targeted for workers with the intention of meeting General Awareness training requirement as well as several Function-specific Training requirements in addition to the basic requirements met by our 4-hour DOT Hazmat Basic General Awareness course.

This course has been approved for 10 Contact Hours (1 CEUs) of REHS Continuing Education Credits (Public Health Accreditation #044).

Overview

All workers employed in an industry that involves the transportation of hazardous materials must have DOT General Awareness training. This includes not just drivers and manufacturers, but anyone who manufactures, repairs, or reconditions containers used to transport hazardous materials.

In addition to meeting the requirements of DOT General Awareness training, this DOT Hazmat General Awareness/Function Specific training also includes the following function-specific topics:

This course can be taken as initial training or refresher training, and must be refreshed a minimum of every 3 years. If you are involved in transportation by air, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires refresher training every 2 years.

About This Course

Following the completion of all training content and achievement of passing scores on all exams, students will need to complete a brief evaluation and confirm his/her identity. After doing so, the student will have access to the course completion certificate.

This fully narrated course is built for success, and includes interactions, exercises, and quiz questions intended to help prepare students for the final exam. Students must answer each quiz question and complete each interaction in order to proceed.

Course Exams

This course has nine module exams, each based upon the content covered in the module preceding it. Each exam consists of 10 questions randomly selected from a larger pool of questions. A score of 70% or better is required to pass each exam. If a student does not pass the first time, they may retake the exam as many times as necessary in order to pass.

Course Objectives

The objectives of the DOT Hazmat General Awareness/Function Specific course are to meet the Federal Department of Transportation training requirements of 49 CFR 172.704(a)(1) as well as some basic requirements for 49 CFR 172.704(a)(2)(i).

Per 49 CFR 172.704(a)(1)
General awareness/familiarization training. Each hazmat employee shall be provided general awareness/familiarization training designed to provide familiarity with the requirements of this subchapter, and to enable the employee to recognize and identify hazardous materials consistent with the hazard communication standards of this subchapter.
Per 49 CFR 172.704(a)(2)(i)
Function-specific training. (i) Each hazmat employee must be provided function-specific training on the requirements of this subchapter, or exemptions or special permits issued under subchapter A of this chapter, that are specifically applicable to the functions the employee performs.
Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the basic hazmat hazard classes and divisions and understand their associated hazards;
  • Use the hazmat table to locate proper shipping names, identification numbers, hazard classes, packaging and labeling requirements, and more;
  • Complete shipping papers for hazardous materials;
  • Demonstrate the proper use of markings, labels, and placards; and
  • Describe the differences in packagings and which types of packagings are appropriate for specific hazardous materials.
Training Requirements

A complete DOT Hazardous Materials training curriculum must include:

Each Hazmat Employer must train, test and certify each Hazmat Employee within 90 days of employment. Recurrent training is required at least once every 3 years.

Initial training is required within 90 days for new employees or employees who assume new hazmat related responsibilities. Until they are trained, these employees may perform a hazardous materials employee function only under direct supervision.

DOT requires that hazmat employees be retrained and tested at least once every three years. However, the FAA, under 14 CFR, requires training for air carrier employees every two years.

Both the DOT and FAA require employers to maintain training records.

Depending on your specific occupation your employer may also require you to take OSHA, EPA, or other hazardous materials response training.

ID cards are mailed from our Main Office in Southern California via U.S. Postal Service to anywhere in the United States. Addresses outside the U.S. may incur additional postage fees. HAZMAT EMPLOYER

Per the U.S. Department of Transportation

A person whose employee(s) perform the following functions:

  • Transport hazardous materials (hazmat) in commerce;
  • Cause hazmat to be transported or shipped in commerce; or
  • Represent, mark, certify, sell, offer, recondition, test, repair, or modify packagings as qualified for use in the transportation of hazmat.

The term "hazmat employer" also includes any department, agency, or instrumentality of the United States, a State, a political subdivision of a State, or an Indian tribe engaged in offering or transporting hazmat in commerce.

HAZMAT EMPLOYEE

Per the U.S. Department of Transportation

A person who is employed by a hazardous materials employer and directly affects hazardous materials (hazmat) transportation safety.

An owner-operator of a motor vehicle which transports hazmat, and a person (including a self-employed person) who:

  • Loads, unloads, or handles hazmat;

Modal-Specific Training

Modal-specific training is hazardous materials transportation training that is specific to the mode of transportation by which a hazmat is conveyed. There are four DOT modal-specific courses, one for each mode of transportation:

In-Depth Security Training

In-depth Security training is required when an employer is required by 49 CFR 172.800(b) to have an In-depth Security plan. This training is site specific and covers actions taken by employees according to the employer's plan. In-depth security training is not currently offered.

Driver Training For Motor Vehicle Operators

Drivers of motor vehicles that transport hazardous materials must have training that involves how to safely transport a hazardous material by highway. This may involve a wide variety of driver safety courses. Driver training is not currently offered.
