This online course focuses on the modal-specific training requirement for carrying hazardous materials as a passenger and accepting and/or transporting hazardous materials in commerce as an air carrier in any aircraft in the United States and in all aircraft registered in the United States, anywhere in the world.
The course will address the following topics:
- Quantity limitations;
- Packaging requirements;
- Excepted materials;
- Separation requirements; and
- Notification to the Pilot-in-Command.

About This Course
Following the completion of all training content and achievement of passing scores on all exams, students will need to complete a brief evaluation and confirm his/her identity. After doing so, the student will have access to the course completion certificate.
This fully narrated course is built for success, and includes interactions, exercises, and quiz questions intended to help prepare students for the final exam. Students must answer each quiz question and complete each interaction in order to proceed.
This course has a final exam based upon the content covered in the course. The exam consists of 10 questions randomly selected from a larger pool of questions. A score of 70% or better is required to pass the exam. Students who do not pass the exam the first time may retake the exam as many times as necessary in order to pass.
The objectives of the DOT Hazmat: Carrier Requirements - Air/IATA are to meet the Federal DOT modal specific training requirements of 49 CFR 175.20 and Part 172, Subpart H of the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the DOT requirements for air transportation of hazardous materials as set forth in Subparts A, B, and C of HMR Part 175;
- Compare the guidelines found in Part 175 with the International Civil Aviation Organization's Technical Instructions
for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air;
- Distinguish between the responsibilities of the shipper and the air carrier;
- State the notification guidelines for passengers, pilots, and facilities;
- Identify the exceptions to the "Carrying of Hazmat in Cabins or on Flight Decks" regulation;
- Define 'cargo aircraft', 'passenger aircraft', 'forbidden,' and 'magnetic field;'
- Evaluate the packaging requirements for air transportation;
- Identify quantity limitations and exceptions, loading, unloading, and storage guidelines for air transportation; and
- Identify guidelines related to completing a discrepancy report and identify incident reporting guidelines.
A complete DOT Hazardous Materials training curriculum must include:
- Safety awareness training (Coming Soon);
- (if applicable); or
- (if applicable).
Each must train, test and certify each within 90 days of employment. Recurrent training is required at least once every 3 years.
Initial training is required within 90 days for new employees or employees who assume new hazmat-related responsibilities. Untrained employees may perform hazardous materials employee functions, but only under direct supervision.
The Department of Transportation requires all hazmat employees to be retrained and tested at least once every 3 years. However, the FAA, under 14 CFR, requires retraining for air carrier employees every 2 years.
Both the DOT and FAA require employers to maintain training records.
This training used to be referred to as DOT HM-181, DOT HM-126 or DOT HM-126F, which are older regulations associated with these training requirements.
This DOT Hazmat: Carrier Requirements - Air/IATA course provides training in the shipping requirements for any personnel involved in the transportation of hazardous materials by air.
Additional training may be warranted depending on the role of the worker and their level of involvement, which may include emergency response training, additional DOT hazardous materials training, or training in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) used as part of the job.
Additional training in the use of any personal protective equipment (PPE) or clothing used as part of emergency response is also required and should be provided by your employer.
Workers must receive additional training, when required by Federal, State, or local regulations, on the specific hazards of their job. Training providers should be used to ensure credibility and augment a company's training program. Therefore, in addition to the training provided by an outside party, a student should receive site-specific training supplied by his or her employer. This training should target the company's unique approach to hazard prevention, including the use of site-specific equipment, health and safety policies, and emergency procedures. As a rule, this company-specific training should be well documented.
