Overview

Training for Hydrogen Sulfide, or H2S, is essential for all workers who could be exposed to H2S during their work activities.

The level of training needed depends on the exposure level. Workers potentially exposed to high levels of H2S at or above the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) would require this 6-hour OSHA/ANSI Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Certification course, while workers exposed to low concentrations typically can take an awareness level training course.

This 6-hour OSHA/ANSI Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Certification (6-hour OSHA/ANSI H2S Certification Online) course not only helps fulfill the training requirements of Federal and State OSHA standards but is also intended to meet the H2S Certification level training requirement for ANSI/ASSP Z390.1, Accepted Practices for Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Training Programs. In order to meet ANSI requirements for H2S Certification, this course also includes training on potential exposures to Sulfur Dioxide, or SO2.

For those who are potentially exposed to less than the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL), and only need awareness training, we offer two other options, either OSHA or OSHA/ANSI:

Keep in mind that while this course provides information on the hazards of the gas, as well as ways to prevent and respond to exposure, you may require additional training in the use of company specific protective equipment and procedures. Training in equipment use and procedures should be provided by your employer and specific to your worksite.

What is an Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL)?
There are numerous exposure levels defined by several regulatory agencies and organizations. One term becoming more popular regarding H2S is 'Occupational Exposure Limit' (OEL). An OEL is a threshold, set by regulatory or advisory bodies, that defines the maximum allowable concentration of a hazardous substance in the workplace air that workers can be exposed to over a specific period without causing adverse health effects. This is similar to a TLV™ or OSHA PEL. However, many employers use the term OEL to refer to the exposure level adopted by the employer or facility. It is important to understand the required or adopted OEL for the site you are working on.

Course Objectives

The objectives of this 6-hourOSHA/ANSI Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Certification (6-hour OSHA/ANSI H2S Certification Online) course are to meet the Federal OSHA training requirements of 29 CFR 1910 and 1926, as well as state OSHA regulations. We also address the H2S Certification training objectives for ANSI/ASSP Z390.1, Accepted Practices for Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Training Programs as well as Canada WHMIS and CCOHS.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course students should be able to:

  • Describe the hazards of exposure to hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide;
  • Identify symptoms of exposure to hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide;
  • Identify workspaces and industries where hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide are common;
  • Describe ways your employer can identify the presence of and limit your exposure to hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen sulfide;
  • Explain the need for and elements of a Contingency Plan; and
  • Describe your employer’s responsibilities with respect to providing workplace controls, safety programs, and training.
Additional Training

When required by OSHA standards, workers must receive additional training on the specific hazards of their job. If you are required to use specific equipment at your job site, you must be trained to use that equipment prior to using it at the job site.

If your employer utilizes specific engineering and administrative controls, safe work practices, or has specific emergency plans related to hydrogen sulfide or sulfur dioxide emergencies, you must be made aware of and be trained in these practices, as well as your role in the execution of the emergency plans.

The bottom line in ALL SITUATIONS is that employers are required to ensure that their employees are adequately trained to do their job.
