This online Hazardous Materials Technician Level III Responder Refresher Online (8 Hour) training course is intended for those who are trained to the Hazardous Materials Technician level per 29 CFR 1910.120(q)(6)(iii) of the OSHA HAZWOPER Standard.
This course has been approved for 8 Contact Hours (0.8 CEUs) of REHS Continuing Education Credits (Public Health Accreditation #044).
Did you know there are FIVE 24-Hour HAZWOPER Courses required by the OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.120?
Each of these courses is very different in both to whom they apply and the topics that are covered during the training.
Hazardous Materials Technicians are trained to respond to hazardous materials emergencies in an offensive fashion. Their primary role is to stop or control a spill or release by approaching the point of the release using specialized personal protective equipment (PPE).
When they respond to chemical spills, Hazmat Technicians are typically members of Hazmat Teams, often referred to as Spill Response Teams or Emergency Response Teams.
Many people are under the false assumption that Hazardous Materials Technician refresher training needs to be a minimum of eight hours in length annually.
This is because the traditional OSHA 8 Hour Refresher Course is required each year for those trained to the 40 Hour HAZWOPER and 24 Hour HAZWOPER levels per section (e) of the OSHA HAZWOPER Regulation.
However, the refresher training requirement for the Hazardous Materials Technician is found in section (q), not section (e), of the HAZWOPER Standard.
Those employees who are trained in accordance with paragraph (q)(6) of this section shall receive annual refresher training of sufficient content and duration to maintain their competencies…
For this reason, we also offer 3 versions of an OSHA 4 Hour Hazardous Materials Technician Level III Responder Refresher option.
By offering shorter 4-hour versions, employers have the ability to have their employees take a 4-hour version twice a year for a total of 8 hours of annual refresher training if that is the goal.
This benefits the employee since it shortens the time frame between refresher training sessions to 6 months rather than 12 months.
Many employers go as far as conducting a 4-hour refresher session every three months to keep their Hazmat Team at a high level of readiness.

Each exam consists of 10 questions randomly selected from a large pool of questions. A score of 70% or better is required to pass each exam. Students who do not pass the exam the first time may retake the exam as many times as necessary in order to pass.

When required by OSHA standards, workers must receive additional training on the specific hazards of their job. Training providers should be used to ensure credibility and augment a company's training program.
In addition to the training provided by an outside party, a student should receive site-specific training provided by his or her employer. This training should target the company's unique approach to hazard prevention, including the use of site-specific equipment, health and safety policies, and emergency procedures. Safety Unlimited, Inc. urges follow-up, on-site specific equipment training with the actual equipment that will be used as part of their role as an emergency responder. As a rule, this company specific training should be well documented.
