Q - How much computer knowledge do I need in order to take online training?
A - To use online training, users should have a basic knowledge of computers. This should include, but is not limited to, the ability to use a mouse, of which involves knowing the difference between left-click and right-click; the ability to open and close documents and web pages; and the ability to navigate a website. Those with no computer experience at all may have trouble using our online training and, for their own benefit, may want to enroll in a basic computer training class before using any of our online courses.

Q - Can I take the online courses from more than one computer?
A - Yes, you can take our online courses by signing in with your user name and password from any location and computer with high-speed internet access. However, each computer does need to meet our basic system requirements for viewing our online courses.

Q - Do I need an email address to take online courses with Safety Unlimited, Inc.?
A - Yes, an email address is necessary for the purpose of enrolling in our online courses. However, since a user name, not an email, is required to log in to a student account, it is possible to have multiple users with the same email address.

Q - How long do the courses take to complete?
A - Our courses are set up to take a specific amount of time. Some students may get through the training more quickly, while others may actually take longer to complete their training. Remember, this training should be used as an intricate tool in the context of an overall training program; it can be combined with other training throughout the year in order to meet any hour requirements needed.

Q - Do I have to finish the course in one sitting?
A - No, our courses are designed so you can start and stop as needed, allowing you to break the training up over a longer period of time. Our system will keep track of your progress, enabling you to resume where you left off upon your next login. It is important that once you start a section, you complete that section or you will need to start that section over from the beginning upon your return.

Q - How long do I have to finish the course?
A - Typically for 8 hour courses you have 90 days to complete the training, while longer courses (24, 32, or 40 hours) allow for 180 days to complete the training. However, if you need longer, we can work that out on a case by case basis, and we have never denied an extension request.

Q - What if I fail the exam(s)?
A - You can take any exam as many times as needed to pass. Our exams are randomly selected from a pool of questions; therefore, each time you take the exam it will be slightly different.

Q - Can I take the 40 Hour HAZWOPER Course entirely online?
A - The 40 Hour HAZWOPER Course can be taken entirely online, but keep in mind that students will need to be trained on how to use any protective equipment that they need as part of their job prior to using that equipment on any work site. This is the case whether the student takes the course online or takes the course in a classroom setting.

Q - Following the 32-hour online portion of the 40 Hour HAZWOPER, where can I get my 8-hour hands-on classroom training from Safety Unlimited, Inc.?
A - View current classroom locations and schedule.

Q - I do not see an area near me for my training, what other options are there?
A - Some students prefer to get the 8-hour hands-on training locally through another training provider, or even through their employer. For those students, we offer an Online 32 Hour HAZWOPER course to combine with the hands-on portion. In some cases, when another training provider does not issue a 40-hour certification, we may be able to do so. However, this is only done when students who have taken the 32 hours of online training are able to provide sufficient proof of taking the hands-on portion.

Q - In reference to the requirement for employees to have "a minimum of three days actual field experience under the direct supervision of a trained experienced supervisor," per the HAZWOPER regulation, can I do my hands-on training during that time?
A - The three-day requirement of direct supervision has nothing to do with the training requirement. This requirement is meant to ensure that newly trained employees are not sent to a work site and left unsupervised but get supervised field experience for at least three days. It is not part of their training period; it is part of their job function period.

Q - If I have had the 24 Hour HAZWOPER training and want to upgrade to the 40 Hour HAZWOPER, do I need to take the entire training over again?
A - No, students that have taken the 24 Hour HAZWOPER course can upgrade to the 40 Hour HAZWOPER level by taking an additional 16 hours of training. This can be accomplished by taking the 16 Hour HAZWOPER Upgrade.

Q - How much time do I have after completing the 24 Hour HAZWOPER training before I must upgrade to the 40 Hour HAZWOPER level?
A - There is no specified time limit within the OSHA regulation. However, it is important that students have completed yearly refresher training sessions.

Q - Can I use my one-time 8 Hour Initial HAZWOPER Supervisor training course as my refresher training for that year?
A - No, OSHA would expect a general hazardous waste site worker who is becoming a supervisor or manager to receive at least 16 hours of training during the year they become a supervisor: 8 hours of management and supervisory training in addition to 8 hours of employee refresher training. HAZWOPER requires that supervisors and managers be trained and given supervised field experience to at least the level of the employees who they will oversee, and have at least eight additional hours of specialized training on the topics listed in 1910.120(e)(4).

Q - What does OSHA say about online or computer-based HAZWOPER Refresher training?
A - See for yourself and go to: OSHA HAZWOPER FAQs

Q - What if it has been longer than 12 months since I received my refresher training?
A - This does not mean you must take the initial training all over again. Per OSHA, "If the date for refresher training has lapsed, the need to repeat the initial training must be determined based on the employee's familiarity with safety and health procedures used on site. The employee should take the next available refresher training course. There should be a record in the employee's file indicating why the training has been delayed and when the training will be completed."

Q - Our company is in the state of California, should I follow the federal HAZWOPER regulation or the state HAZWOPER regulation?
A - For any state to have its own HAZWOPER Refresher training regulation, it would have to meet or exceed the federal standards; therefore, you would be better off concentrating your efforts on meeting the state regulation. Doing this, by default, will cover you for the federal standard.

Q - Can Safety Unlimited, Inc. split up the 8 Hour HAZWOPER Refresher training over more than one day for our company?
A - Yes, we often conduct training segments in 2, 3, or 4 hour blocks. We spread the training out over the number of days it takes to total 8 hours. In fact, we often will do 4 hours on a Saturday, and 4 hours on a Sunday at a nice location and provide our popular customized annual refresher.
