Overview

1,3-Butadiene, also known simply as Butadiene, is a chemical made from the processing of petroleum. It is one of the higher volume chemicals produced in the U.S. It is a colorless gas with a mild gasoline-like odor that easily condenses to a liquid. It is used primarily to make synthetic rubber, which is widely used for the manufacture of tires and plastics. It is also used as a chemical intermediate in the production of different industrial chemicals.

Butadiene is irritating to the upper respiratory system, flammable, explosive when mixed with air, and carcinogenic. It is believed to be the most potent carcinogen in cigarette smoke. Acute exposure to low doses of BD may cause irritation to the eyes, throat, nose, and lungs. Acute exposure to high doses of BD may cause damage to the central nervous system or cause such symptoms as distorted blurred vision, vertigo, general tiredness, decreased blood pressure, headache, nausea, decreased pulse rate, and fainting. The EPA classifies BD as a known human carcinogen.
