This Methylene Chloride Awareness course is intended for workers who may be exposed to methylene chloride at their workplace. The training will provide a general understanding of the hazards and health effects of exposure, as well as employer requirements intended to prevent workplace exposures.

This course has been approved for 1 Contact Hour (0.1 CEUs) of REHS Continuing Education Credits (Public Health Accreditation #044).

Overview

While this course provides information on the dangers of methylene chloride and recommended exposure limits, the method of protection provided by your employer may necessitate additional training in order to maximize the methods’ effectiveness. Training in the use of workplace-specific equipment and safety procedures should be provided by your employer.

This OSHA-accepted training is brought to you by a team of OSHA-certified Outreach Trainers and meets the requirements for 29 CFR 1910.1052 for General Industry. The requirements in these regulations are identical for those found in the regulations for Shipyards (1915.1052) and Construction (1910.1152).

About This Course

This fully narrated course is built for success and includes interactions, exercises, and knowledge checks intended to prepare students for the final exam. Students must answer each knowledge check and complete each interaction in order to proceed.

Course Exams

This course has a single final exam based upon the knowledge checks that appear in each section.

The final exam consists of 20 questions selected at random for a large pool of questions. A score of 70% or better is required to pass the exam. Students who do not pass the exam the first time may retake the exam as many times as necessary in order to pass.

Course Objectives

The objective of this Methylene Chloride Awareness is to meet provide workers with the hazards associated with and protective measures used in response to methylene chloride in the workplace. This content is derived primarily from 29 CFR 1910.1052.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify where workers may encounter methylene chloride;
  • Describe hazards and health effects associated with methylene chloride exposure;
  • Explain the need for the Methylene Chloride Standard;
  • Identify and describe OSHA methods of conformance used to prevent methylene chloride exposure; and
  • Describe medical surveillance and hazard communication requirements.
Additional Training

When required by OSHA standards, workers must receive additional training on the specific hazards of their job. If you are required to use specific equipment at your job site, you must be trained to use that equipment prior to using it at the job site.

If your employer utilizes specific engineering and administrative controls, safe work practices, or has specific emergency plans related to methylene chloride emergencies, you must be made aware of and trained in these practices and your role in the execution of the emergency plans.

The bottom line in ALL SITUATIONS is that employers are required to ensure that their employees are adequately trained to do their job.
