State Certified EMTs

State of California EMTs

This course counts as a complete EMT Refresher Course for current or expired (within the past 2 years) EMTs in California who need to complete 24 hours of EMT refresher training or continuing education. Select "EMT Refresher Certificate" during the enrollment process.

Also needed is a valid CPR certification and California EMT Skills Testing, which is scheduled monthly in Simi Valley, California or can be provided by a certified instructor in your area.

Other State Certified EMTs

Each State EMS Agency establishes its own specific EMT certification requirements, many of which simply utilize the certification process of the NREMT (see below for how this course applies to NREMTs).

Additionally, local EMS agencies, EMS Providers, and Medical Directors can establish higher standards and requirements. Please contact your EMS Agency for specific recertification requirements.

State EMS Agencies Information

Note – The NREMT Exam must be passed within 2 years of the completion date of the initial EMT Training.

National Registry EMTs (NREMTs)

Aspiring NREMTs

Note – Current NREMTs must be actively working within an emergency medical service, rescue service, or patient health care facility using their EMT-Basic/EMT skills.

Course Outline

This course consists of 28 sections broken down into 7 modules. It is recommended that users take each section in sequential order, although this is not required. There is no final exam.

Please note the exam questions are based upon material that comes from both the course content and previous knowledge that the EMT should have. For newer EMTs or those who may have forgotten much of that base knowledge, we strongly recommend using the textbook that can be purchased during enrollment to pass the exams. For more on the Textbook, please click the Options Tab.

Course Exams

This course has 7 module exams based upon the 7 modules. Each exam consists of 25 questions randomly selected from a large pool of questions. A 75% score or better is required to pass each exam. If a student does not pass the exam the first time, they may retake the exam as many times as necessary in order to pass. Again, there is no final exam.

EMT Refresher Handbook

EMT Refresher Text Book

Emergency Care, Twelfth Edition, has set the standard for EMT training for over 30 years. Updated with the latest research and developments in emergency medical services, this edition meets the 2010 American Heart Association guidelines for CPR and ECC, providing all the practical information students need to succeed in the classroom and in the field. Using the National EMS Education Standards as a foundation, this edition goes beyond the Standards to provide the most current, accurate reflection of EMS practice today. Getting students to think like an EMT, the text integrates scientific principles in a way that's easy to understand, and a host of critical thinking features–including a new chapter, "Critical Thinking and Decision Making," – helps students learn key concepts while getting a dose of the reality of being an EMT.
